It is an aggressive tumor – constitutes 60 to 70% of all aggressive lymphoid neoplasms
Characteristics
Large cell size of neoplastic B cells
Diffuse pattern of growth
Subtypes
1. Immunodeficiency associated LBCL
Occurs in End stage HIV infection
SCID
Allogenic BMT
Solid organ transplantation
The neoplastic B cells are often latently infected with EBV
2. Body cavity LBCL
Arises as malignant pleural or ascitic effusions
Occurs in advanced HIV & Elderly people
The neoplastic B cells are infected with HHV-8




Patients typically presents with a RAPIDLY ENLARGING MASS at a SINGLE NODAL or EXTRANODAL SITE (GIT, Skin, Brain or Bone)



The cells are large, with prominent nucleoli and abundant cytoplasm
